Heddis Stewart

Heddis Augustus Stewart was born on February 13th, 1932 to the parents of Reuben Stewart and Christina Gordon. He was the third of his siblings, some of whom predeceased him. He was born in the parish of Flamstead, St. James, Jamaica and attended the Johns Hall and Sudbury All Age Schools. After relocating to Mount Salem he met his beautiful and caring wife Amy (affectionately known as “Sister”). The two have been inseparable for over 60 years and their union produced 4 wonderful children: George Stewart, Stephen Stewart, Wendy Stewart and Phillip Stewart.

Heddis became a mason shortly after leaving school. In the early 1970’s he moved his family from Mount Salem to Green Pond and with his magnificent skills he was able to design and build his own house. Not only did this house become a home to his wife and children, but over the years it was a home to extended family and others who would often come to live with them.

Heddis was a quiet and happy person. He adored his family and worked very hard to provide for them. Whenever he was not out working, you would often find him searching for work to do around the house. As he got older he still found ways to keep busy, but would often enjoy relaxing on his porch as well. Heddis also loved his grandchildren and always wanted to know that they were okay. Heddis had a close relationship with his parents and his siblings. He would even refer to his daughter as “Girlie”, which was really his sister’s name. He was also close to his nieces and nephews and had the privilege of giving his niece, Sonia, away in marriage.  He would often go to visit his nieces and nephews when they were younger and when he got older they in turn came to visit him. Often times he would encourage his children, nephews and nieces by passing down the same advice that his parents gave to him.

Heddis passed away on Saturday December 16th 2017. We will always cherish his memories. Leaving to cherish his memories are his wife, Amy Stewart; his sons: George, Stephen and Phillip Stewart; his daughter, Wendy Brissett-Stewart; grandsons: Andrew, Christopher, Sheldon, Dylan, Isayah and Joseimar Stewart; granddaughters: Phylicia Stewart and Kaylee Brissett; his brother Alfred Stewart; sisters: Phyllis and Millicent (“Girlie”) Stewart; son in law, Calford Brissett; daughter in laws, Coraline and Juanita Stewart; nephews, nieces and a host of other close friends and relatives.

  1. Beverly says:

Surely miss my uncle and I believe his family has deeply miss him too especially Phillip. He was truly a loving and kind person and was always welcoming never seen him with a frown. Thank God one day soon death will be swallowed up in victory through Jesus Christ our Lord and with this assurance, I say to the Stewart’s family, you are not along, Jesus cares when your heart is pained too deeply for mirth and song, as the daylight fades into deep night shades and the days grow weary and long, oh yes, he cares, I known he cares, his heart is touch with your grief, when the days are weary the long nights dreary I know my Saviour cares. Love you all.

  2. Garfield Edwards says:

I went by the house earlier this year 2019
And for the 1st time in my 50 years of life I went on to the veranda looked in the chair and there was no Heddis. I did not see my one of a kind uncle. He was the only stable fatherly male figure I had come to know over all these years. He was always there to greet me. Even very late at nights when I journeyed from a Kingston to Green Pond St James. He would wait up for me once I called and told him I am only my way. It was a difficult moment for me. I couldn’t help but cry ?.
